Box Score MADISON, N.J. – Despite totaling 12 hits in the ballgame, the FDU-Florham baseball team fell to St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) 8-6 on Thursday afternoon.
The Devils (17-12) drop the first-ever meeting between the two teams and have now lost back-to-back games. With the win, the Bears improve to 21-8 on the campaign.
In the loss, FDU-Florham senior shortstop
Brandan Adams (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) picked up career hit number 200. The senior went 2-for-5 on the day with one run scored.
After a sacrifice fly by St. Joseph's senior right fielder
Joe Mendez, FDU-Florham trailed 1-0. The Devils responded with two runs in the home half of the first. Junior
Mike Onorato (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) hit a rocket through the legs of the Bears' shortstop to plate a run and then senior first baseman
Frank LaGuarina (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) knocked in the second run with a single to center field.
In the top of the second, St. Joseph's managed to score four runs without recording a single hit. The Bears used five walks and some aggressive base running to manufacture the runs and snag a 5-2 advantage.
Devils junior center fielder
Frankie Tassielli (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) continued his hot-stretch at the plate, and smacked a run-scoring double, which brought FDU-Florham within two through two innings of play.
The Bears tacked on two more runs with RBI-singles in the top of the fourth to stake a 7-3 lead. In the bottom of the fifth,
James Dertouzos (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) and
Alex Geramita (Old Tappan, N.J./Don Bosco) each plated a run, which cut the deficit to 7-5.
Trailing 8-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Tassielli launched his team-leading fifth home run of the season but unfortunately the solo blast equated to the Devils final run of the contest, as the home team lost by two.
Tassielli has now homered in back-to-back games, including two jacks against Drew University on Wednesday.
St. Joseph's sophomore right-hander
Brian Luebcke entered the game in the second inning and went the rest of the way to earn his third victory of the season, while FDU-Florham junior
Alec Fenstermacher (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) drops to 0-1 with the loss.
The Devils allowed a season-high 14 walks in the game, ten of which came over the first two frames.
Mendez paced the Bears' attack by going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, while freshman center fielder
Michael Camerada added two hits and an RBI in the win.
