Box Score EWING, N.J. – The FDU-Florham baseball team slugged their way to a 13-10 victory over The College of New Jersey on Tuesday afternoon at George Ackerman Park.
The Devils (17-10) hammered 19 hits, equating to 13 runs and the victory. With the loss, the Lions drop to 17-14 on the season.
FDU-Florham's junior leadoff man
Frankie Tassielli (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) paced the Devils attack with four hits, two runs and three RBI in the victory.
After a scoreless first inning, the Devils posted five runs in the second frame. Tassielli plated two with a single, sophomore catcher
Kevin Sinclair (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) knocked in two more with a double and FDU-Florham added another run on a throwing error.
The Lions fought back in the home half of the inning, as four hits resulted in five runs for TCNJ and they cut the deficit to one. In the top of the fourth, senior first basemen
Frank LaGuarina (Somerset, N.J./Immaculata) hit his second home run of the season, a three-run shot over the left field fence, which gave the Devils an 8-4 cushion. Later in the inning, junior
Mike Onorato (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) singled up the middle to plate the Devils ninth run.
However, TCNJ came storming back once again and evened the score with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Lions' damage came courtesy of four run-scoring singles, all with two outs, which knotted the game at 9-9.
In the bottom of the seventh, TCNJ junior
Anthony Cocuzza sliced an RBI-triple to left center, which put the Lions in front 10-9.
The Devils remained undeterred and in the top of the eighth, Sinclair tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Two batters later, LaGuarina delivered again, this time with an RBI-single, which plated Tassielli and put FDU-Florham ahead for good. The Devils tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth and closer
Bobby Bray (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) secured the win by retiring the final three batters in order for his fourth save of the season.
Onorato went 3-for-4 with two runs in the win, while Sinclair and LaGuarina combined for four hits and each knocked in four runs in the game. Junior right-hander Sean Geiger (Mt.Olive, N.J./Mt.Olive) pitched an inning of relief and earned his second win of the year.
Cocuzza led the Lions with three hits and two RBI, while sophomore
John Rizzi knocked in two runs and totaled two hits in the loss.
The 19 hits is a season-high for FDU-Florham.
