Bowe's Game-Winning Hit Gives Devils Split with Valiants

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham Devils baseball team overcame a 4-0 deficit and earned a walk-off victory on senior second baseman John Bowe's (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) RBI-single in extra innings to take game one of the doubleheader against Manhattanville College on Sunday afternoon. The Devils (13-8, 10-4 Freedom) dropped the second game 12-7, which gave the Valiants (13-11, 7-7 Freedom) the doubleheader split.

Game One:
After five innings the Valiants held a 4-0 lead but FDU-Florham was just warming up. In the home half of the sixth, junior centerfielder Frankie Tassielli (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) launched a solo home run to get the Devils on the board. The long blast over the left field fence was Tassielli's first of the season.

With three outs to go, FDU-Florham put together a seventh inning rally. Senior right fielder Kyle Herron (Edison, N.J./JP Stevens) and Bowe began the inning with back-to-back singles. Next, Herron scored on a throwing error by Manhattanville shortstop Jordanis Nunez, which brought the Devils within two runs. FDU-Florham tied the game on an attempted double play turn by the Valiants, which resulted in an overthrow and two runs crossing the plate.

Freshman left-hander Matt Zingaro (Manchester Township, N.J./Manchester) came up clutch in the eighth inning and kept the game tied. After giving up back-to-back singles, Zingaro buckled down and struck out Nunez and forced Valiants clean-up hitter Robbie Lynch to fly out to center field, which kept things deadlocked at 4-4.

Senior first baseman Frank LaGuarina (Somerset, N.J./Immaculata) began the home eighth by lining a single into left field and then advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. After a ground out and a fly out, Bowe stepped up to the dish and laced the game-winning single through the left side of the infield, which plated LaGuarina and gave the Devils the victory.

Zingaro did an excellent job in relief, tossing three shutout innings and striking out four to earn his first career victory.  Bowe led the Devils offense with a 2-for-4 day, including a run scored and the game-winning RBI.

Game Two:
The Valiants got to FDU-Florham starter Jeff Jacobs (Old Bridge, N.J./St. John Vianney) early with three runs over the first two frames. Manhattanville freshman Chris Conklin smacked a solo blast in the top of the first inning and the Valiants tacked on two more runs with an RBI-double in the second inning to stake a 3-0 lead. On the double, Herron threw a strike from right field to home plate and Devils catcher Kevin Sinclair (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) blocked the plate perfectly and applied the tag to prevent a fourth run from scoring.

However, the Valiants offense continued to deliver as the away team added three more runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run triple by Conklin. FDU-Florham junior Alex Geramita (Old Tappan, N.J./Don Bosco) smoked a single off of Nunez's glove, which plated the Devils first two runs of the game.

Unfortunately, the Valiants responded in the top of the fifth with four more runs, which built their cushion to 11-2.  The Devils were unable to mount the large comeback, ultimately falling 12-7.

LaGuarina and Bowe each totaled two hits in the loss, while Germita went 1-for-4 with a run scored and the two RBI.

Conklin went 4-for-5, knocked in five runs and scored three times to lead the Valiants, who totaled 19 hits as a team in the win. Junior starter Zack Zareva earned the win for Manhattanville and is now 3-0 on the season, while Jacobs dropped to 1-3 with the loss.
