Big Fourth Inning Sends Devils Past Bulldogs

Box Score MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham Devils baseball team overcame a 4-0 deficit to claim an 11-5 Freedom Conference victory over DeSales University on Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Devils (12-6, 8-2 Freedom) move into first place in the Freedom Conference standings, however, these two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow in Center Valley, Pa.

Seven different Devils plated runs in the victory, as senior right-hander Chris Roberts (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) earned the win to improve to 4-2 on the campaign.

After two scoreless innings, the Bulldogs (11-11, 8-3 Freedom) made the Devils pay for a throwing error by putting four runs on the board. DeSales' senior Brian Mauro launched a three-run home run to dead center field in the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, FDU-Florham got the bats going. Senior third baseman Austin Tomaszewicz (Old Bridge, N.J./St. John Vianney) drove in two runs with a single and then sophomore catcher Kevin Sinclair (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) followed with his own two-run single, which gave the Devils a 5-4 lead.

The Devils continued the momentum into the home half of the fifth inning. Senior first baseman Frank LaGuarina (Somerset, N.J./Immaculata) plated a run with a single and then scored on a double by sophomore James Dertouzous (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick).  The Devils tacked on three more runs, which built a comfortable 10-4 cushion for the home team.

Freshman Matt Zingaro (Manchester Township, N.J./Manchester) and senior Sean Gieger (Mt. Olive, N.J./Mt. Olive) each tossed a scoreless inning in relief of Roberts to secure the victory.

Sinclair led the Devils with a 3-for-4 afternoon and two RBI, while Tomaszewicz drove in three runs in the win.  Mark Westdyk topped the Bulldogs with two hits in the loss.

Next up for the Devils:
These two teams face off again tomorrow, April 13th when FDU-Florham heads to Center Valley, Pa. for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
