Scarlet Raptors Snap Devils Seven-Game Win Streak

Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – The FDU-Florham Devils baseball team's seven-game winning streak came to an end after 9-3 loss to Rutgers University-Camden on Tuesday afternoon.

The loss drops the Devils to 9-4 on the season, while the Scarlet Raptors move to 10-5-1 with the victory. Junior Joe Hofmann (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) got the start for the Devils and pitched four innings, allowed eight hits, five runs (three earned) while striking out four and dropped to 1-1 on the season. Freedom Conference Player of the Week Frankie Tassielli (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park) went 2-for-5 and was the lone Devils to tally multiple hits in the game.

FDU-Florham held a 2-0 lead after two innings of place thanks to a pair of unearned runs. Frank LaGuarina (Somerset, N.J./Immaculata) started the second inning with a bloop-single into center field. After an error and a walk, sophomore Sam Coutoufos (Edison, N.J./Edison) plated the first run on a catcher's interference. Unfortunately, the Devils next batter Austin Tomaszewicz (Old Bridge, N.J./St. Joseph's Metuchen) hit into a double-play, which scored a run but limited the rally.

The Scarlet Raptors bounced back and quickly gained the lead in the home half of the second. RU-Camden's designated hitter Brandon Porter knocked an RBI-triple to right center field and then scored on a single by the next batter Bobby Romano. Romano stole a base, took third on a wild pitch and then scored on a two-out RBI single, which gave the Scarlet Raptors at 3-2 lead.

In the top of the fourth, the Devils evened the score thanks to an RBI-ground out by Tomaszewicz. However, the Scarlet Knights regained the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Doug Carter led off with a double, advanced on a fly out and then scored on a passed ball. The Scarlet Raptors added one more run with an RBI-single to stake a 5-3 lead.

RU-Camden added one run in the sixth inning and two in the eighth to claim the 9-3 win. Scarlet Raptors leadoff man Brett Tenuto finished 3-for-5 with two RBI in the victory, while sophomore left-hander Chris Scarlett tossed five innings, allowed five hits and struck out four to improve to 2-0 on the season.
