Devils Fall to Cyclones 9-1

FLEMINGTON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham Devils baseball team fell to 0-2 on the season after a 9-1 loss to the Centenary College Cyclones on Tuesday night.

Junior Andrew Hille (Edison, N.J./St. Joseph's Metuchen) started for the Devils and went two innings, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out four in a no decision. The Cyclones (2-2) hammered out 16 hits on the afternoon, led by junior first baseman Ryan Caparoni's 4-for-5 effort.

Three consecutive hits in the bottom of the first inning resulted in a 1-0 lead for the Cyclones. The Devils knotted the score at 1-1 in their half of the fourth on a ground ball by Brandan Adams (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), which plated Nick Meoli (East Meadow, N.J./Kellenberg). Meoli reached on a double down the left field line earlier in the frame. Meoli's double was the Devils only extra-base hit in the contest.

Unfortunately, the Cyclones struck for three runs in the home-half of the fourth, two of which came courtesy of a double by junior Kevin Litus. In the fifth inning, Caparoni smacked an opposite-field homer which provided Centenary with a 5-1 lead.

In the seventh inning, the Cyclones tacked on two more runs to pull away from FDU-Florham. The Devils were unable to mount a comeback off of Centenary starter Mitch Renz, who went eight innings, while striking out eight in the win for the Cyclones.

FDU-Florham pitcher Jeff Jacobs (Old Bridge, N.J./St. John Vianney) (0-1) took the loss on the day after tossing two innings and allowing three runs on four hits in relief.

Next up for the Devils:
This weekend, the Devils head to Fort Pierce, Florida for their five-game spring break trip. FDU-Florham opens against Freedom Conference foe Delaware Valley College, this Saturday, March 15th at 12:00 p.m.
