Box Score MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham Devils men's basketball team earned an exciting victory on Saturday afternoon, coming from behind to defeat King's College 61-52 at the Ferguson Recreation Center.
With the win, the Devils (11-10, 6-4 Freedom) complete the season sweep of the Monarchs and enter a four-way tie for second place in the Freedom Conference standings. FDU-Florham, Misericordia University, Delaware Valley College and Manhattanville College all trail DeSales University by one game in the loss column.
The two squads shot below 30 percent and combined for only 15 made baskets in the opening stanza. The Monarchs (11-10, 4-6 Freedom) limited the Devils to 20 percent from the floor and held a 23-17 advantage at the break.
The Devils opened the second half with a strong 13-4 run. The game remained tight throughout the stanza, including three ties, until the Monarchs eventually claimed a 42-41 lead with 7:06 left in regulation. However, the Devils regained the lead after a basket inside by
Kevin Furlong (Hazlet, N.J/Raritan) and retained the upper hand for the remainder of the contest.
John Flete (Flemington N.J./North Hampton CC) drained a floater in the lane,
Trevor Sykes (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) knocked down a jumper and Furlong drilled a three to push the FDU-Florham lead to 50-44.
With 52 seconds to play and the Devils leading 53-48, Flete converted two crucial free throws to provide FDU-Florham with a seven-point lead. Furlong followed with a basket and Flete iced the game with a crowd-pleasing dunk to secure the victory.
Furlong finished with a game-high 22 points and hauled in seven rebounds, while Flete and Sykes totaled 18 and 13 points respectively. Sykes did an excellent job on the defensive end and came up with four steals on the afternoon. Senior forward
Will Green (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) pulled in a game-high 13 boards in the win.
Sophomore forward
Tom Heston paced the Monarchs with 18 points and nine rebounds, both team-highs, while
Kyle Hammonds finished with 13 points in the loss.
After their dismal first half, the Devils recovered to shoot 55.6 percent from the floor in the second half and converted 12 of their 14 free throw attempts.
