#3 Devils Drop Heartbreaker To #2 DeSales, 8-7, In Freedom Tourney

Box Score QUAKERTOWN, PA - Trailing 5-2 entering the top of the seventh inning, the third-seeded College at Florham Devils scored two in the seventh and three in the eighth to take a 7-6 lead over second-seeded DeSales but the Bulldogs plated two in the bottom of the ninth to upend the Devils by a score of 8-7 in the Freedom Conference Tournament on Friday evening.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 16-22 while the Bulldogs improved to 31-11.  FDU will now go on to play top-seeded Misericordia in an elimination game on Saturday morning while DeSales will play fourth-seeded Manhattanville in a winner's bracket game.

DeSales jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a run apiece in the first and second innings before FDU cut it to 2-1 in the top of the third thanks to a RBI groundout from junior shortstop Brandan Adams.  The Bulldogs got that run back in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 advantage but FDU cut it to 3-2 in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Kyle Herron.  DeSales responded again though, scoring two runs in their half of the fifth to grab a 5-2 edge.  Things were looking bleak for the Devils at that point but DeSales was forced to go to their bullpen in the seventh inning and FDU bats woke up just in time.  In the top of the seventh, senior outfielder Nick Core singled and came around to score thanks to a wild pitch to make it 5-3 before junior designated hitter Nick Meoli drew a bases loaded walk to trim the deficit to 5-4.  The Bulldogs came back once again however, getting a run back in their half of the seventh to increase their lead to 6-4.  The Devils grabbed their first lead of the game in the top of the eighth when they plated three runs on a huge two-run double by junior third baseman Austin Tomaszewicz, which tied the game at 6-6, and a clutch two-out RBI single by Adams that made it 7-6.  FDU got through the bottom of the eighth unscathed and threatened but did not score in the top of the ninth.  In the bottom of the ninth, the Devils got the lead-off man out but DeSales used two infield singles and an error to put runners on first and third.  The Bulldogs then tied it up at 7-7 on a single to right field and after an intentional walk that loaded the bases, DeSales plated the game-winner on another infield single to escape with the win.

Tomaszewicz finished the game 2-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI while doing most of his damage after getting hit in the face by a pitch.  Core went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, junior second baseman John Bowe was 2-for-2, and Adams went 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Junior pitcher Chris Roberts started the game and got a no-decision, tossing five innings and allowing five runs on eight hits while walking eight and striking out two.  Sophomore pitcher Bobby Bray then went two innings, giving up one run (unearned) on one hit while striking out three.  Sophomore pitcher Chris Wirth-Kenyon suffered the loss, going 1.2 innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, May 4, 2013, in the Freedom Conference Tournament when they take on top-seeded Misericordia in Quakertown, PA, beginning at 11 am.
