Box Score DOYLESTOWN, PA - Trailing by a score of 4-3 entering the top of the ninth inning, senior outfielder
Nick Core led off with a triple and senior catcher
Ricky Gathen followed with a two-run home run to left field to give the College at Florham Devils a 5-4 win over Delaware Valley in Freedom Conference action on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Devils improved to 11-12 (7-5 Freedom) while the Aggies dropped to 12-13 (3-9 Freedom).
FDU started the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a RBI triple from junior shortstop
Brandan Adams and a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman
Frank LaGuarina. The scored stayed at 2-0 in favor of the Devils until FDU added another run in the top of the sixth on an Aggie wild pitch. Delaware Valley came right back in the bottom of the sixth inning though, plating three runs to tie it up at 3-3. The Aggies then took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth and looked to close it out in the top of the ninth. Core and Gathen had other plans though, as they came through in the clutch to give FDU the lead. Sophomore pitcher
Ryan Thurnes, who came on to pitch in the eighth inning, closed things out in the bottom of the ninth to give the Devils the victory.
Core, Adams and junior designated hitter
Nick Meoli each finished the game with two hits while Thurnes picked up the win on the mound. Senior pitcher
Jeff Jacobs started and got a no-decision, tossing seven innings and allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out nine.
The Devils return to action on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at New Paltz beginning at 3:30 pm.
