Devils Pick Up Huge Road Sweep Of King's

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WILKES-BARRE, PA - In their quest to qualify for the upcoming Freedom Conference Tournament, the College at Florham Devils took a major step on Sunday afternoon by sweeping a doubleheader from King's.  FDU had to go to 11 innings to win the first game, 5-3, before taking the nightcap by a count of 4-3.  The Devils just need to win one of the three games they play against Manhattanville next weekend to make the conference tournament.

With the wins, the Devils are now 14-17 (10-8 Freedom) while the Monarchs dropped to 16-13 (6-12 Freedom).

GAME ONE - FDU started the scoring with a run in the top of the second inning on a RBI groundout from junior third baseman Austin Tomaszewicz before taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the third thanks to a sacrifice fly by junior second baseman Nick Meoli.  The Devils grabbed a 3-0 advantage in the top of the fourth on a RBI single by Tomaszewicz but King's cut their deficit to 3-2 by plating two runs in their half of the fourth.  With the Devils only one out away from the win in the bottom of the seventh, King's scored the game-tying run on an error to send the game into extra innings.  Neither team got much going over the next three innings until FDU scored two in the top of the eleventh on a RBI double by Tomaszewicz and a King's error.  Sophomore pitcher Ryan Thurnes then finished his fantastic outing in the bottom of the eleventh to secure the win for the Devils.

Tomaszewicz finished the game 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and three RBI while junior shortstop Brandan Adams and sophomore outfielder James Dertouzos each roped two hits.  Sophomore pitcher AJ Pichalski started and got a no-decision, tossing six innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four.  Thurnes picked up the win in relief, throwing the final five innings and giving up one run (unearned) on two hits while striking out five.

GAME TWO - King's got on the board first in the nightcap, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning before the Devils grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the second thanks to a two-run double from Dertouzos.  FDU took a 3-1 advantage in the top of the third on a RBI double by senior outfielder Nick Core and the Devils made it 4-1 in the top of the fifth on a RBI double by junior outfielder Kyle Herron.  The Monarchs cut it to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth before making it 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth but senior pitcher Jeff Jacobs finished off a great outing by retiring King's in the seventh to give FDU the sweep.

Dertouzos went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI in the second game while Adams was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.  Jacobs picked up the win, tossing seven innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out three.

The Devils return to action on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at home against TCNJ beginning at 3:30 pm.
