Box Score MADISON, NJ - The College at Florham Devils rallied from a 7-5 deficit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at 7-7 but King's scored three runs in the top of the 11th to earn a 10-7 victory in Freedom Conference action on Friday afternoon.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 12-17 (8-8 Freedom) while the Monarchs improved to 16-11 (6-10 Freedom).
King's got on the board first with three runs in the top of the second inning before FDU came back with three of their own to tie it at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a two-run double from senior catcher
Ricky Gathen and a double play ball that a run scored on. The Devils went on top, 5-3, in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI double by junior designated hitter
Nick Meoli and a RBI single from junior third baseman
Austin Tomaszewicz. King's came right back in the top of the seventh though, plating four runs to grab a 7-5 lead. FDU got nothing going in the seventh or eighth innings and things looked bleak in the ninth with a runner on second base and two outs. The Devils got a huge break then as King's dropped a pop-up in short right field that allowed the run to score to make it 7-6. Junior first baseman
Frank LaGuarina then came up and roped a double to left field to tie the game at 7-7. LaGuarina was stranded at second base however, sending the game into extra innings. Neither team threatened in the 10th inning but the Monarchs broke the game open in top of the 11th, scoring three runs to take a 10-7 lead. In the bottom of the 11th, sophomore outfielder
James Dertouzos led off with a single but King's retired the next three batters to secure the win.
Meoli finished the game 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and a RBI while Gathen went 1-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Junior pitcher
Chris Roberts started the game and got a no-decision, tossing 6.1 innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits while striking out three. Sophomore pitcher
Bobby Bray took the loss, going one inning and allowing three runs on four hits.
The two squads return to action on Saturday, April 20, 2013, with a doubleheader in Wilkes-Barre, PA, beginning at 1 pm.
