Box Score MADISON, NJ - The College at Florham Devils were defeated by Staten Island, 8-5, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 12-16 while the Dolphins improved to 22-9.
Staten Island started the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning followed by a run apiece in the second and third to take a 4-0 lead. The Devils cut it to 4-3 in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-run single from senior designated hitter
Ricky Gathen and a RBI single by junior third baseman
Austin Tomaszewicz. The Dolphins grabbed a 5-3 advantage in the top of the sixth but the Devils tied it up at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run home run from junior second baseman
Nick Meoli. Staten Island responded with three runs in the eighth however, to earn the 8-5 victory.
Tomaszewicz finished the game 2-for-3 with a RBI while Gathen and Meoli each drove in two runs. Senior pitcher
Jake Hazen started the game and got a no-decision, tossing six innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out four. Sophomore pitcher
Chris Wirth-Kenyon took the loss in relief, going 1.1 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits.
The Devils return to action on Friday, April 19, 2013, at home against King's beginning at 3:30 pm.
