Box Score 2 MADISON, NJ - The College at Florham Devils dropped both games of a Freedom Conference doubleheader to DeSales on Sunday afternoon, 4-3 and 5-3 in 10 innings.
With the sweep, the Devils are now 12-15 (8-7 Freedom) while the Bulldogs are 21-8 (12-3 Freedom).
GAME ONE - The Devils got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a RBI single from junior first baseman
Frank LaGuarina and a sacrifice fly by senior catcher
Ricky Gathen. DeSales cut it to 2-1 in the top of the fourth before grabbing a 4-2 lead with three runs in the top of the sixth. FDU got one back in their half of the sixth to make it 4-3 on a bases loaded walk by sophomore outfielder
James Dertouzos. The Devils got the leadoff man on in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't do anything else as the Bulldogs escaped with the win.
LaGuarina finished the game 3-for-3 with a stolen base, a run scored and a RBI while sophomore pitcher
AJ Pichalski suffered the loss, tossing 5.1 innings and allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out three.
GAME TWO - FDU scored first again in the nightcap, this time plating three runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run single from junior outfielder
Kyle Herron and a RBI single by Dertouzos. DeSales cut it to 3-2 in the top of the third and the score remained that way until the top of the seventh inning. DeSales led off the inning with a single but senior pitcher
Jeff Jacobs settled in and got the next two outs with the runner advancing to second base. The Bulldogs struck for a base hit on the next batter though, to tie the game at 3-3 and send it to extra innings. Neither team got anything going in the eighth or ninth innings but DeSales plated two runs in the top of the 10th to grab a 5-3 advantage. In the bottom of the 10th, the Devils loaded the bases with just one out but the next two batters both popped up to allow DeSales to get the sweep.
Jacobs picked up a hard-luck no decision, going seven innings and allowing three runs on 10 hits while striking out three. Sophomore pitcher
Ryan Thurnes suffered the loss, throwing the final three innings and allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three.
The Devils return to action on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at home against Staten Island beginning at 4 pm.
