Box Score 2 WILKES-BARRE, PA - After dropping the first game of a three game weekend series on Friday, the College at Florham Devils went on the road and swept a doubleheader from Wilkes in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon. FDU won the first game by a score of 6-1 before taking the nightcap by a count of 10-7.
With the sweep, the Devils are now 10-8 (6-2 Freedom) while the Colonels are 9-6 (2-5 Freedom).
GAME ONE - FDU started the scoring right away with a run in the top of the first inning on a solo home run from junior first baseman
Frank LaGuarina before making it 3-0 in the top of the second thanks to a two-run double by LaGuarina. The Devils tacked on three more in the top of the fifth on a two-run double by senior catcher
Ricky Gathen and a solo home run from junior designated hitter
Nick Meoli. Wilkes got on the board with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning but it was too little, too late as the Devils picked up the win.
LaGuarina finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and three RBI while senior outfielder
Nick Core went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. Meoli was 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored and a RBI. On the mound, sophomore pitcher
AJ Pichalski was fantastic, tossing a complete game seven innings and allowing one run on six hits while striking out five.
GAME TWO - The Devils once again started the scoring in the top of the first inning, this time plating four runs on a grand slam by Meoli. FDU made it 6-0 in the top of the second inning on a solo home run from sophomore outfielder
James Dertouzos and a RBI triple from LaGuarina. Wilkes got two back in the bottom of the second but the Devils grabbed an 8-2 advantage in the top of the third on back-to-back solo home runs from Gathen and Meoli. Wilkes cut it to 8-4 in the bottom of the third but FDU took a 9-4 lead in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by junior third baseman
Austin Tomaszewicz. The Colonels pulled to within 9-5 in their half of the fifth but the Devils got that run right back in the top of the sixth thanks to another solo home run from Tomaszewicz. Wilkes had a big threat in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring two runs to pull to within 10-7 and they had the bases loaded with only one out but sophomore pitcher
Ryan Thurnes got out of the jam to give FDU the sweep.
Meoli finished the nightcap 2-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored and five RBI while Tomaszewicz went 3-for-4 with two home runs, two run scored and two RBI. LaGuarina and Dertouzos each had three hits, a run scored and a RBI. Senior pitcher
Jake Hazen picked up the win, starting and going four innings while allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits. Sophomore pitcher
Bobby Bray then came on to throw two scoreless innings before Thurnes tossed the final inning.
The Devils return to action on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at New Jersey City beginning at 3:30 pm.
