Devils Pick Up Road Sweep Over Eastern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. DAVIDS, PA - The College at Florham Devils swept a Freedom Conference doubleheader over Eastern on Saturday afternoon, winning the first game by a score of 6-2 before taking the nightcap by a count of 12-6.

With the sweep, the Devils improved to 6-6 (3-1 Freedom) while the Eagles dropped to 5-6 (1-3 Freedom).

GAME ONE - FDU got on the board first with a run in the top of the second inning on a solo home run from senior catcher Ricky Gathen.  The Devils grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth thanks to a RBI single by junior designated hitter Nick Meoli.  Eastern cut it to 2-1 in their half of the fourth but FDU plated two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead on a two-run home run by junior shortstop Brandan Adams.  The Eagles cut it to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth but the Devils put the game away with two in the top of the seventh on a RBi single from sophomore outfielder James Dertouzos and a RBI single by Adams.

Adams finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run, a stolen base, a run scored and three RBI while junior Chris Roberts picked up the win on the mound, tossing seven innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three.

GAME TWO - The Devils got off to a great start in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the top of the first on a RBI single from junior first baseman Frank LaGuarina, a RBI double from Gathen, and a RBI groundout by junior third baseman Austin Tomaszewicz.  FDU made it 4-0 in the top of the second on a RBI double from Adams before grabbing a 6-0 lead in the top of the third thanks to a two-run single by senior outfielder Peter Amerosi.  Eastern got three runs back in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-3 but the Devils exploded for six runs in the top of the fith on a two-run single by Amerosi, an error by Eastern, a two-run double by Gathen, and another Eastern error.  The Eagles plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh but it was too little, too late as the Devils picked up the sweep.

Ameorsi finished the game 2-for-4 with a stolen base, a run scored and four RBI while Gathen went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored and three RBI.  Sophomore pitcher AJ Pichalski picked up the win on the rubber, tossing six innings and allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four.

The two squads return to action on Sunday, March 24, 2013, to finish their three-game series in Madison, beginning at 1 pm.
