Devils Get Walk-Off Win Over Keene State, 9-8

Box Score WINTER HAVEN, FL - With the game tied at 8-8 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, sophomore outfielder James Dertouzos singled with one out and came around to score on an error three batters later to give the College at Florham Devils a 9-8 victory over Keene State in the third game of their Spring Break Trip on Monday afternoon.

With the win, the Devils improved to 3-3 while the Owls dropped to 4-6.

Keene State started the scoring with two runs in the top of the second before adding two more in the top of the third before FDU cut it to 4-1 in the bottom of the third thanks to a RBI double from junior shortstop Brandan Adams.  The Devils made it 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Adams scored on a double play but the Owls got two in the top of the sixth to grab a 6-2 advantage.  FDU exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take their first lead of the game, 7-6, on an Owl error, a RBI single from sophomore outfielder Frankie Tassielli, and a three-run double by junior first baseman Frank LaGuarina.  Keene State went back on top, 8-7, in the top of the seventh but FDU tied it at 8-8 in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI triple by senior catcher Ricky Gathen.  Sophomore pitcher Ryan Thurnes pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning and with one out in the bottom of the ninth Dertouzos singled down the left field line to start the rally.  After a strike out, Dertouzos moved to second base on a passed ball before Tassielli was intentionally walked.  Adams then came up to bat and reached on an error by the Owl left fielder, allowing Dertouzos to come around and score the game-winner.

Tassiellie and Adams each had two hits, two runs scored and a RBI in the game while Dertouzos, senior outfielder Nick Core, and junior second baseman John Bowe also wrapped out two hits apiece.  Thurnes picked up the win in relief while senior pitcher Jake Hazen started and went 5.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits while striking out six.

The Devils return to action on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, against Suffolk beginning at noon.
