Box Score 2 DOYLESTOWN, PA - The College at Florham Devils split a Freedom Conference doubleheader with Delaware Valley on Saturday afternoon, losing the first game by a score of 11-10 in eight innings before rebounding to win the nightcap by a count of 10-4.
With the split, the Devils are now 17-15 (12-6 Freedom) while the Aggies are 14-18 (6-12 Freedom).
GAME ONE - FDU started the scoring with two runs in the top of the second inning on a two-run home run by senior first baseman
Ryan Fandel but the Aggies came back with five runs in the bottom of the inning before grabbing a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the third. FDU cut it to 6-5 in the top of the fifth thanks to a three-run home run from senior catcher
Nick Marcucci but the Aggies got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-5. FDU plated four runs in the top of the sixth on a RBI single by senior outfielder
Matt Joiner, a two-run double from junior outfielder
Nick Core and a sacrifice fly by senior designated hitter
John Pieper. Del Val came back once again though, turning their 9-7 deficit into a 10-9 lead in the bottom of the sixth before FDU tied it at 10-10 in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Joiner. The Aggies held FDU scoreless in the top of the eighth and scored the game-winner with one out in the bottom of the eighth.
Marcucci finished the game 1-for-2 with a home run, a run scored and three RBI while Joiner, Core and Fandel all drove in two runs. Senior pitcher
Glenn Cox started and got a no-decision, pitching four innings and allowing six runs on nine hits. Senior pitcher
Chris Laudati suffered the loss in relief, allowing a run in a third of an inning.
GAME TWO - The Devils started the scoring again with a run in the top of the first on an Aggie error before making it 3-0 in the top of the second thanks to sacrifice flies from senior shortstop
Steve Seminerio and Joiner. The Aggies came back with three in the bottom of the second to tie it at 3-3 but FDU got the lead right back in the top of the third with a run on a RBI single from Fandel. Del Val tied it once again in the bottom of the fourth but FDU responded with two in top of the fifth on a solo home run from sophomore designated hitter
Frank LaGuarina and a RBI single by freshman outfielder
Frankie Tassielli. In the bottom of the fifth, the Aggies had runners on first and second with no outs and with the runners going, Del Val hit a line drive to second base that the Devils turned into a triple play to snuff out the threat. FDU then broke the game open with four runs in the top of the seventh on another solo home run by LaGuarina, a sacrifice fly from Seminerio and a two-run single by sophomore second baseman
Brandan Adams.
LaGuarina finished the game 4-for-4 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored and two RBI while Pieper went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Freshman pitcher
Robbie Drexel picked up the win, tossing five innings and allowing four runs on five hits.
The Devils return to action on Sunday, April 22, 2012, at home against Mount Saint Mary beginning at 1 pm.
