Devils Split With Eastern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MADISON, NJ - The College at Florham Devils split a Freedom Conference doubleheader with Eastern on Saturday afternoon, losing the first game by a score of 2-1 before rebounding to win the nightcap by a count of 17-3.

With the split, the Devils are now 14-14 (10-5 Freedom) while the Eagles are 18-12 (7-8 Freedom).

GAME ONE - The first game was a pitcher's duel through the first six innings with neither hurler giving up a run.  In the top of the seventh inning, Eastern plated two runs on two hits but the Devils mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh.  Senior outfielder Matt Joiner led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch before moving over to third on a groundout.  Sophomore designated hitter Frank LaGuarina then came up and delivered a sacrifice fly to score Joiner and make the score 2-1.  That was as close as the Devils would get though as Eastern picked up the final out to get the win.

The Devils only mustered three hits in the game with two of them coming off the bat of Joiner.  Senior pitcher Glenn Cox was the hard-luck loser, tossing seven innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four.

GAME TWO -  Eastern jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but FDU came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning on a bases loaded walk from junior outfielder Nick Core, a RBI fielder's choice by LaGuarina, and a RBI groundout by senior first baseman Ryan Fandel.  The Eagles tied it at 3-3 in the top of the second but FDU responed with five more runs in the bottom of the second thanks to a RBI fielder's choice by sophomore second baseman Brandan Adams, a sacrifice fly from Joiner, a two-run double by LaGuarina, and an Eastern error.  The Devils then made it 9-3 in the third on a RBI single by Joiner before grabbing an 11-3 advantae in the fifth on RBI singles from Joiner and Core.  FDU really broke it open in the bottom of the sixth when they scored six runs on an Eastern error, a two-run triple by senior shortstop Steve Seminerio, a RBI groundout by freshman second baseman Ryan Thurnes, and a two-run home run from Core.

Joiner finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI, Core went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBI, and Seminerio was 4-for-5 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBI.  Freshman pitcher Robbie Drexel earned the win, tossing six innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out four.

The Devils return to action on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at home against Mount Saint Mary's beginning at 3:30 pm.
