Box Score 2 MADISON, NJ - The College at Florham Devils took both games of a Freedom Conference doubleheader against Wilkes on Saturday afternoon, winning the first game in extra innings, 4-3 (8), before taking the nightcap by a margin of 18-9.
With the two wins, the Devils improved to 7-8 (4-2 Freedom) while the Colonels dropped to 5-12 (1-5 Freedom).
GAME ONE - FDU got on the board right away with two runs in the bottom of the first on a RBI double by sophomore second baseman
Brandan Adams and a RBI single from senior outfielder
Matt Joiner. Wilkes cut it to 2-1 in the top of the third before grabbing a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth. Junior outfielder
Nick Core tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run and each team went scoreless in the seventh to send the game to extra innings. The Devils held Wilkes in the top of the eighth and got a RBI single from senior first baseman
Ryan Fandel in the bottom of the eighth to pick up the victory.
Fandel finished the game 2-for-4 with a RBI while senior third baseman
John Pieper went 2-for-3. Senior pitcher
Glenn Cox started the game and got a no-decision, tossing 6.1 innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits. Senior pitcher
Mike Winters picked up his third straight victory in relief, going 1.2 innings and allowing no runs on one hit.
GAME TWO - The Devils again struck first, this time with three runs in the bottom of the first on a RBI single by Joiner and a two-run double from Core. FDU made it 6-0 in the second thanks to a RBI double from Adams and a two-run double by sophomore designated hitter
Frank LaGuarina before taking a 7-0 lead in the third on a Wilkes error. The Colonels cut it to 7-3 in the top of the fourth before FDU answered with five in the bottom of the fourth to take a 12-3 lead on two-run Wilkes error and a three-run home run from senior catcher
Greg Caso. The Colonels battled back though, scoring six in the top of the fifth to pull to within 12-9 but the Devils put the game away with four in the bottom of the fifth on a grand slam home run from LaGuarina to take a 16-9 lead before adding two more in the sixth on a two-run single by Joiner to finish the scoring at 18-9.
Joiner finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI while LaGuarina went 2-for-6 with a double, a home run, a run scored and six RBI. Adams was 3-for-4 with two doubles, four runs scored and a RBI. Freshman pitcher
Robbie Drexel earned the win, throwing four innings and allowing seven runs (four earned) on eight hits.
The Devils return to action on Tuesay, March 27, 2012, at Rutgers-Camden beginning at 3:30 pm.
