Devils Swept By DeSales In Freedom Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CENTER VALLEY, PA - The College at Florham Devils opened up Freedom Conference play on Saturday by dropping both games of a doubleheader to DeSales.  The Bulldogs took the first game by a score of 10-7 before rallying from a 5-0 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the nightcap, 6-5.

With the sweep, the Devils dropped to 3-8 (0-2 Freedom) while the Bulldogs improved to 7-4 (2-0 Freedom).

GAME ONE - DeSales jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings of play before the Devils cut their deficit to 5-3 in the top of the fifth on a two-run double by freshman outfielder Frankie Tassielli and a DeSales error.  The Bulldogs came right back in the bottom of the fifth though, plating five runs to take a 10-3 advantage.  FDU got two back in the top of the sixth thanks to a sacrifice fly from Tassielli and a RBI single by senior shortstop Steve Seminerio.  The Devils then pulled to within three, 10-7, in the top of the seventh on a RBI triple from junior outfielder Nick Core and a RBI groundout by sophomore designated hitter Frank LaGuarina.  FDU had runners on first and second with only one out but DeSales induced a double play ball to end the game.

Tassielli finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBI while Seminerio, senior outfielder Matt Joiner and senior first baseman Ryan Fandel each had two hits apiece.  Senior pitcher Glenn Cox took the loss, tossing four innings and allowing six runs on 10 hits.

GAME TWO - The Devils grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a RBI double by Joiner before taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth thanks to a RBI double from sophomore second baseman Brandan Adams.  FDU then plated three more in the top of the sixth on a solo home run from Core and two Bulldog errors.  It was looking the like the Devils would earn the split but DeSales came up in the bottom of the seventh and tied the game at 5-5 before recording an out.  After the Devils got two outs, an error and a double ended the game and allowed DeSales to pick up the victory.

Joiner and Adams each finished with two hits and a RBI while senior pitcher Fred Lucchetti picked up a no-decision, throwing six innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out eight.  Senior pitcher Chris Laudati suffered the loss in relief, going two-thirds of an inning and allowing three runs on three hits.

The Devils and Bulldogs complete their three-game series on Monday, March 19, 2012, in Madison beginning at 3:30 pm.
