Box Score WINTER HAVEN, FL - Trailing 8-1 heading into the top of the eighth inning, the College at Florham Devils scored five runs in the eighth and one more run in the ninth but the rally came up just short as the Devils were knocked off by UMass-Boston, 9-7, in the first game of their Florida Spring Break Trip on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 0-3.
UMass-Boston started their scoring with a run in the bottom of the first before adding three more to make it 4-0 in the bottom of the third. The Beacons then plated two in the fifth and two in the sixth to grab an 8-0 advantage. FDU got on the board in the top of the seventh on a RBI double from senior catcher
Greg Caso. The Devils then exploded for five runs in the top of the eighth to cut their deficit to 8-6 thanks to a RBI single from junior outfielder
Nick Core, an error by the Beacons, a RBI single from senior first baseman
Ryan Fandel, a RBI single by sophomore thid baseman
Austin Tomaszewicz, and a RBI groundout by Caso. UMass-Boston got one run back in the bottom half of the inning to go up 9-6 heading into the top of the ninth. Freshman outfielder
Frankie Tassielli cut it to 9-7 on a RBI triple with no outs but the Devils couldn't push across any more runs and the Beacons picked up the win.
Senior shortstop
Steve Seminerio finished the game 2-for-5 with a stolen base and two runs scored while Core went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI. Senior pitcher
George Savaides suffered the loss, going 2.1 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits.
The Devils return to action on Sunday, March 11, 2012, with a doubleheader against Suffolk beginning at 1 pm.
