QUAKERTOWN, PA - The third-seeded College at Florham Devils were defeated by top-seeded Misericordia, 5-4, in the first game of the Freedom Conference Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon. The Misericordia win means that the two squads will play a winner-take-all game on Monday for the Freedom Conference Championship.
With the loss, the Devils dropped to 22-13 while the Cougars improved to 26-14.
FDU got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single from junior designated hitter
Matt Joiner. The Cougars grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the top of the third before FDU tied it at 2-2 in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a RBI single by junior first baseman
Ryan Fandel. The Devils went back on top, 3-2, in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single by freshman second baseman
Brandan Adams but Misericordia responded with two in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. FDU cut it to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run from junior shortstop
Steve Seminerio but that was all the Devils could muster as the Cougars forced the if necessary game.
Adams finished the game 3-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI while Joiner and junior third baseman
John Pieper each had two hits. Junior pitcher
F.J. Lucchetti started and suffered the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits in five innings. Junior pitcher
Mike Winters was outstanding out of the bullpen, coming on to pitch the final four innings and allowing no runs on two hits.
The Devils and Cougars return to action on Monday, May 9, 2011, in the Championship Game of the Freedom Conference Tournament at Quakertown Memorial Park beginning at 7:30 pm.
