QUAKERTOWN, PA - Senior pitcher
Brandon Smith tossed seven innings while allowing two runs on three hits to lead the third-seeded College at Florham Devils to a 7-5 victory over top-seeded Misericordia in the Freedom Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon. In a game that featured a two hour and three minute rain delay, the Devils will now play for the conference crown on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Devils improved to 22-12 while the Cougars dropped to 24-14. Misericordia will now play second-seeded DeSales in an elmination game on Sunday at 12 pm, with the winner facing FDU in the finals.
The Devils got things started with a run in the top of the second inning on a Cougar error but Misericordia came back to tie it at 1-1 in the bottom of the third. FDU jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the top of the fourth thanks to a two-run single by junior third baseman
John Pieper, a bases loaded hit-by-pitch from freshman second baseman
Brandan Adams and a sacrifice fly by senior outfielder
Matt Oliveto. The Cougars pulled to within 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh but FDU made it 7-2 in the top of the eighth on a two-run single by junior designated hitter
Matt Joiner. Misericordia came right back with three runs though, to close to within 7-5, before the rains came in the top of the ninth inning. After the two-hour delay, FDU couldn't tack on any insurance runs in the top of the ninth but junior pitcher
Chris Laudati came on two slam the door in the bottom of the ninth, pitching a perfect inning with two strikeouts.
Junior shortstop
Steve Seminerio finished the game 3-for-5 with a run scored while senior outfielder
Ryan Kalish scored two runs.
The Devils return to action on Sunday, May 8, 2011, against the winner of the DeSales/Misericordia game at Quakertown Memorial Park beginning at 3 pm.
