QUAKERTOWN, PA - The third-seeded College at Florham scored 11 runs in the first four innings on their way to a 12-5 victory over second-seeded DeSales in the Freedom Conference Tournament on Friday evening.
With the win, the Devils improved to 21-12 while the Bulldogs dropped to 19-17. FDU will now move on to play top-seeded Misericordia in the winner's bracket while DeSales will play fourth-seeded King's in an elimination game.
FDU got things started with two runs in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by seniour outfielder
Matt Oliveto and a RBI single from junior designated hitter
Matt Joiner. The Devils made it 5-0 in the top of second thanks to three solo home runs by senior catcher
Joe Meglio, junior shortstop
Steve Seminerio and freshman second baseman
Brandan Adams. FDU plated two more in the third on a two-run double by junior third baseman
John Pieper before putting the game out of reach with a four-spot in the fourth thanks to bases loaded walks by junior first baseman
Ryan Fandel and senior outfielder
Ryan Kalish and a two-run double from Meglio.
The Devils made it 12-0 in the top of the seventh before DeSales scored three in the seventh and two in the eighth to make the final score 12-5.
Seminerio, Adams, Oliveto, Fandel, Meglio and sophomore outfielder
Nick Core all had two hits apiece while Meglio also drove in three runs. Junior pitcher
Glenn Cox was outstanding on the mound, taking a shutout into the eighth before exiting with one out. Cox tossed 7.1 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits while striking out six.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, May 7, 2011, against Misericordia at Quakertown Memorial Park beginning at 3 pm.
