WILKES-BARRE, PA - The College at Florham Devils swept a Freedom Conference doubleheader from Wilkes on Saturday afternoon, winning by scores of 24-15 (10) and 14-11.
With the sweep, the Devils are now 12-6 (7-2 Freedom) while the Colonels dropped to 10-10 (5-6).
GAME ONE - In a wile game, Wilkes jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings before freshman second baseman
Brandan Adams got FDU on the board with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth. Wilkes got those runs right back though, grabbing a 10-2 advantage after four innings. FDU plated four in the fifth, Adams drove in two of the runs with a single, but the Colonels scored three in their half of the fifth to take a 13-6 lead. FDU tallied five more in the sixth to make it 13-11 thanks to a solo home run by senior outfielder
Matt Oliveto, a three-run home run by Adams, and a solo home run from senior catcher
Joe Meglio. The Devils then sent the game to extra innings with two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run by Oliveto. Each team scored a run in ninth to keep the game tied at 14-14 before the Devils exploded for nine runs in the top of the tenth inning. The big blows were a two-run single from Oliveto, a two-run double by senior outfielder
Ryan Kalish, a two-run single from Adams, and a two-run single from junior shortstop
Steve Seminerio. Wilkes got a run in their half of the tenth but it wasn't nearly enough as FDU picked up the win.
Adams finished the game 5-for-7 with two home runs, three runs scored and nine RBI, all of which are career-highs. Oliveto was 4-for-7 with two home runs, four runs scored and five RBI while Seminerio, Kalish, junior designated hitter
Matt Joiner and junior third baseman
John Pieper each drove in two runs.
Junior pitcher
Mike Winters picked up the win in relief, tossing three innings and allowing one run on two hits.
GAME TWO - FDU got off to a fast start in Game Two, scoring seven runs in the top of the first on a RBI fielder's choice by Oliveto, a two-run Wilkes error, a three-run double by Pieper, and a RBI single by Seminerio. The only problem in the inning was that Wilkes came back to score five runs in the bottom of the first to cut their deficit to 7-5. The Devils tacked on two runs in the third to take a 9-5 lead thanks to a two-run home run by Adams, his third home run of the day, but Wilkes got one back in their half to make it 9-6. FDU plated one in the fourth on a RBI double by junior catcher
Nick Marcucci but Wilkes scored four in their half of the fourth to tie the game at 10-10. It stayed that way until the top of the seventh when FDU scored four on a two-run single by sophomore outfielder
Nick Core and a two-run home run from Joiner. The Colonels didn't go down without a fight, scoring one in their half of the seventh but junior closer
Chris Laudati was able to shut the door to allow the Devils to get the sweep.
Seminerio went 3-for-4 with a triple, a stolen base, three runs scored and a RBI while Adams went 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored and two RBI. Core, Joiner and Pieper drove in two, two and three runs, respectively.
Junior pitcher
Matt LaTorre came on in relief to stabalize things in the fourth inning,tossing 1.2 innings and allowing no runs on two hits while striking out four. Joiner picked up the win, throwing a perfect 0.2 innings.
Amazingly enough, these two teams return to action on Sunday, April 10, 2011, when they play the third and final game of their weekend series in Madison beginning at 3 pm.
