Smith Boys Pitch Devils To Sweep Over Misericordia

MADISON, NJ - The College at Florham Devils swept Misericordia, 7-2 and 16-5, in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon behind the arms of senior pitcher Brandon Smith and junior pitcher Bobby Smith.  The wins clinched a spot in the upcoming Freedom Conference Tournament for FDU where the Devils will be either the second or third seed.

With the wins, the Devils improved to 19-12 (13-8 Freedom) while the Cougars dropped to 21-11 (12-6 Freedom).

GAME ONE - Misericordia got on the board first with a run in the top of the second inning but FDU got that back in the bottom half of the frame on a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Ryan Fandel.  The Devils made it 2-1 in the fourth thanks to a solo home run from sophomore outfielder Nick Core before plating five in the fifth on a two-run single by junior shortstop Steve Seminerio, RBI singles from senior outfielder Matt Oliveto and Core, and a sacrifice fly by junior designated hitter Matt Joiner.  The Cougars got one in the ninth but it wasn't enough as the Devils got the win.

Core finished 2-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI.  Brandon Smith got the win on the mound, tossing a complete game seven innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits.

GAME TWO - The nightcap got out of control quickly, as the Devils batted around in both of the first two innings on their way to scoring 13 runs.  FDU added one in the third and two in the fourth to complete their scoring.

Oliveto went 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, three runs scored and four RBI while junior catcher Nick Marcucci drove in three runs.  Bobby Smith picked up the win on the hill, tossing five innings and allowing four runs on seven hits.

The Devils return to action on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at home for Senior Day against Vassar beginning at 1 pm.
