Devils Outlast Misericordia, 10-7

SWOYERSVILLE, PA - Junior designated hitter/pitcher Matt Joiner went 2-for-3 with a triple, a stolen base, three runs scored and two RBI at the plate while coming in to induce a game-ending double play with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth as a pitcher to lead the College at Florham Devils to a 10-7 win over Misericordia in Freedom Conference action on Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Devils improved to 17-12 (11-8 Freedom) while the Cougars dropped to 21-9 (12-4 Freedom).

Misericordia got the scoring started with a run in the bottom of the second but the Devils came right back with three in the top of the third on a Cougar error, a RBI ground out by senior outfielder Matt Oliveto and a sacrifice fly from junior designated hitter Matt Joiner.  FDU took a 4-1 lead in the fourth thanks to a bases loaded walk by Oliveto but the Cougars cut it to 4-3 in their half of the fourth.  The Devils made it 5-3 in the top of the fifth when Joiner scored on a double play before Misericordia cut it to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning.  FDU plated three in the top of the seventh to gab an 8-4 advantage on a two-run home run home run by junior first baseman Ryan Fandel and a RBI single from junior shortstop Steve Seminerio.  The Cougars got a run back in their half of the seventh to make it 8-5 but FDU notched two more in the eighth on a triple by Joiner and a sacrifice fly from Fandel to take a 10-5 lead.  In the bottom of the ninth, the Cougars pushed across two runs to cut it to 10-7 and had the bases loaded with one out when Joiner came in to get the double play ball to save the game for the Devils.

Seminerio finished the game 3-for-6 with a double, a run scored and a RBI while junior third baseman John Pieper went 3-for-3 with a run scored.  Fandel was 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored and three RBI.  Junior pitcher Glenn Cox started and picked up the win, going 5.2 innings and allowing four runs on six hits while striking out four.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, April 30, 2010, when they host Misericordia in a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
