Late Rally Falls Shorts As Devils Lose To Wilkes, 13-10

MADISON, NJ - Trailing 13-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the College at Florham Devils scored six runs with no outs but couldn't push across anymore as Wilkes held on for the 13-10 win in Freedom Conference action on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 12-7 (7-3 Freedom) while the Colonels improved to 11-10 (6-6 Freedom).

Wilkes put up a run in the top of the first inning but FDU got it right back on a RBI single from sophomore outfielder Nick Core.  The Colonels scored three in the second but the Devils made it 4-2 in their half of the second on a solo home run from junior first baseman Ryan Fandel.  Wilkes then plated two in the third and three in the fifth to grab a 9-2 advantage before FDU cut it to 9-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI ground out by junior designated hitter Matt Joiner.  Wilkes scored two more in the sixth but FDU got one back in the seventh on RBI ground out by Core to pull to within 11-4.  The Colonels tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the ninth that didn't seem big at the time but turned out to be huge because the Devils tallied six runs in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run home run by Core and a grand slam from senior catcher Joe Meglio.  That was as close as FDU would get though, as Wilkes was able to salvage the final game of the weekend series.

Meglio finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, a run scored and four RBI while Core went 2-for-5 with a home run, a run scored and four RBI.  Senior outfielder Matt Oliveto was 4-for-6 with a double, two triples and two runs scored.  Oliveto is now FDU's All-Time leader in career triples.

Junior pitcher FJ Luchetti suffered the loss, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits.

The Devils return to action on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at Delaware Valley beginning at 3:30 pm.
