Devils Split With Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, PA - The College at Florham Devils split a Freedom Conference doubleheader with Eastern on Sunday afternoon, winning Game One by a score of 12-4 before dropping the nightcap, 16-15.  In the second game, the Devils were down 15-7 heading into the seventh and final inning before putting up eight runs to tie the game at 15-15.  Eastern scratched out a run in their half of the seventh however, to earn the split.

With the split, the Devils are now 7-5 (2-2 Freedom) while the Eagles are 5-9-1 (1-4 Freedom).

GAME ONE - FDU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, before Eastern plated a run in the bottom of the third.  The Devils then scored four in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth to break the game open.

Junior shortstop Steve Seminerio led the way, going 4-for-5 with a triple, a home run, a stolen base, three runs scored and two RBI.  Senior outfielder Matt Oliveto belted a home run and drove in four runs.  Junior pitcher Glenn Cox earned the win, going six innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits.

GAME TWO - The Devils again got off to a hot start, taking a 4-0 lead after two innings of play.  Eastern came back though, scoring a run in the third and sixth in the fourth to grab a 7-4 advantage.  FDU got one in the fifth but Eastern answered with two in the fifth to increase their lead to 9-5.  The Devils cut it to 9-7 in the top of the sixth but the Eagles plated six more in the bottom half of the sixth to open up a 15-7 lead.  That's when the Devils exploded for eight runs in the seventh to tie the game at 15-15 but Eastern scratched out one more in the bottom of the frame to escape with the win.

Junior first baseman Ryan Fandel finished 3-for-5 with three doubles, a run scored and three RBI.  Seminerio went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI while Oliveto was 2-for-3 with a home run, two stolen bases, four runs scored and a RBI.  Junior pitcher Chris Laudati suffered the loss in relief, allowing one run on two hits in a third of an inning.

The Devils return to action on Monday, March 28, 2011, at home against Eastern to complete the three-game series beginning at 3:30 pm.
