Devils Split Conference Opener With King's

WILKES-BARRE, PA - The College at Florham Devils split their Freedom Conference opener with King's on Sunday afternoon, winning Game One by a score of 15-5 before dropping the nightcap by a count of 12-4.

With the split, the Devils now stand at 6-4 (1-1 Freedom) while the Monarchs are 5-9 (1-1 Freedom).

GAME ONE - FDU started the scoring with four runs in the top of the first on RBI singles by sophomore outfielder Nick Core, junior designated hitter Matt Joiner, senior outfielder Ryan Kalish, and senior catcher Joe Meglio.  The Devils added two more in the second thanks to RBI singles by junior third baseman John Pieper and Joiner.  King's made it 6-1 in their half of the second but FDU got that run back in the third on a RBI single by junior shortstop Steve Seminerio.  The Monarchs cut it to 7-2 in the fourth but FDU scored two runs in the fifth, five runs in the sixth, and a run in the seventh to take a 15-2 advantage.  King's scored three times in the ninth but it wasn't enough as FDU earned the win.

Meglio finished the game 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, Pieper went 3-for-5 with a run and three RBI, and Seminerio was 2-for-2 with a double, two stolen bases, three runs scored and two RBI.  Junior pitcher Glenn Cox picked up the win, tossing six innings whille allowing two runs on nine hits.

GAME TWO - The Devils got things started in the first inning once again, this time plating two runs on a King's error and a RBI double by Joiner.  The Monarchs closed to 2-1 in the second but FDU took a 3-1 in the fourth on a RBI double from freshman second baseman Brandan Adams.  King's exploded in the fourth in and fifth innings though, scoring six and five runs, respectively, to put the game out of reach.

Joiner and Seminerio each finished with two hits while senior pitcher Brandon Smith suffered the loss, going 4.1 innings and allowing 10 runs (six earned) on seven hits.
