Devils Downed By Manhattanville In Freedom Finals, 10-3

BOYERTOWN, PA - The second-seeded College at Florham Devils were defeated third-seeded Manhattanville, 10-3, in the Freedom Conference Tournament Championship Game on Sunday afternoon at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, PA.

With the loss the Devils dropped to 31-10 while the Valiants improved to 21-19-1.  Manhattanville will now move on to the NCAA Tournament while the Devils will await a possible at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament or a berth into the ECAC Metro Region Tournament.

The Valiants jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning but the Devils tied it at 1-1 in the top of the fourth on a RBI ground-out by senior third baseman Joey Santillo (Budd Lake, NJ/Mt. Olive) after sophomore shortstop Steve Seminerio (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) doubled and stole third base.  FDU grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by sophomore first baseman Ryan Fandel (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) after sophomore outfielder Matt Joiner (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) singled, stole second and advance to third on an error.  Manhattanville came right back in their half of the fifth with a run of their own to tie it at 2-2 before taking a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The Devils scratched across a run in the top of the seventh to tie it again, 3-3, on a RBI single by junior outfielder Dan Pregno (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley).  The Valiants took firm control of the game in their half of the seventh as they plated five runs, with four coming on a grand slam home run, and they added two more insurance runs in the eighth to seal the conference championship.

Seminerio finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored while Pregno went 2-for-4 a RBI.  Sophomore pitcher Glenn Cox (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) made the start for FDU and picked up a no-decision, tossing six innings and allowing three runs on five hits while striking out seven.  Senior pitcher Bill Buckless(Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) suffered the loss, giving up five runs in 0.2 innings pitched out of the bullpen.
