Winters Pitches Devils To Freedom Finals, 6-4, Over DeSales

BOYERTOWN, PA - Sophomore pitcher Mike Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) came out of the bullpen to throw four scoreless innings and in the process picking up the win, as the second-seeded College at Florham Devils eliminated top-seeded DeSales by a score of 6-4 in the Freedom Conference Tournament on Saturday evening.

With the win, the Devils improved to 31-9 and tied the school record for most wins in a season.  DeSales dropped to 25-17 with the loss.  The Devils will now move on to play third-seeded Manhattanville for the championship on Sunday.  FDU will have to beat Manhattanville twice while the Valiants only have to beat the Devils once.

DeSales got on the board first with one run in the bottom of the second inning but the Devils plated two runs in the top of the third on a two-run error by the Bulldogs.  DeSales came right back three runs in their half of the third to grab a 4-2 advantage before FDU made it 4-3 in the top of the fifth thanks to a RBI single by senior catcher Marc Hubbert (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro).  The Devils took the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning when they scored three runs to make it 6-4.  The first two batters of the inning were retired by DeSales but sophomore shortstop Steve Seminerio (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) doubled, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.  Hubbert then walked and senior third baseman Joey Santillo (Budd Lake, NJ/Mt. Olive) followed with a single.  Each then moved up a base on a passed ball and senior designated hitter Greg Geran (Brick, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) knocked them both in with a two-run double.  Winters, who came in the game in the sixth inning, then held the lead for FDU which now allows them to play for the title on Sunday.

Geran finished the game 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI while Seminerio went 2-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored.  Senior second baseman Chris Baldino (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) had two hits while junior outfielder Dan Pregno (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley) scored two runs.

Sophomore pitcher Matt Mizerek (Matawan, NJ/Matawan) started the game and battled through five innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits.  In his four innings of relief, Winters did not allow a hit and struck out four.

The Devils return to action on Sunday, May 9, 2010, against Manhattanville beginning at noon.  If the Devils win that game, the two teams will play again beginning at 3 pm.
