BOYERTOWN, PA - Junior pitcher
Fred Luchetti (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) made his first start of the season and tossed six innings while allowing one run on six hits and striking out eight to lead the second-seeded College at Florham Devils to a 4-1 win over fourth-seeded King's in an elimination game in the Freedom Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Devils improved to 30-9 while the Monarchs dropped to 23-16. FDU will now move on to play the loser of the DeSales/Manhattanville game tonight at 7 pm.
King's got on the board first with a run in the top of the fourth inning but the Devils came back to tie it at 1-1 on a RBI single by senior catcher
Marc Hubbert (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro) in the bottom of the fifth inning. The big blow of the game came off the bat of senior designated hitter
Greg Geran (Brick, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) in the bottom of the seventh inning when he drilled a three-run home run with two outs in the inning to give the Devils a 4-1 lead. That's all the Devils needed as the bullpen was spectacular in shutting down King's.
Sophomore shortstop
Steve Seminerio (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored while sophomore first baseman
Ryan Fandel (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) went 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base.
Luchetti took a no-decision for the Devils while sophomore pitcher
Matt Joiner (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) picked up the win in relief, tossing two innings and allowing no runs on one hit. Sophomore pitcher
Chris Laudati (Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearly) notched the save, tossing a scoreless ninth inning.
The Devils return to action later tonight, Saturday, May 8, 2010, in another elimination game beginning at 7 pm.
