Bullpen Shuts The Door In Sweep Of Manhattanville

MADISON, NJ - Three relievers tossed a scoreless inning apiece in Game One to nail down an 8-6 win while sophomore pitcher Chris Laudati (Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearly) threw a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the save in a 7-5 Game Two win, as the College at Florham Devils swept Manhattanville in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon.  Laudati also notched a save in the first game.

With the sweep, the Devils improved to 16-3 (8-1 Freedom) while the Valiants dropped to 7-13 (3-6 Freedom).

GAME ONE - Manhattanville started the scoring right away with two runs in the top of the first inning but the Devils came right back with two of their own in the bottom of the first on sacrifice flies by sophomore designated hitter Matt Joiner (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) and sophomore first baseman Ryan Fandel (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central).  FDU made it 3-2 in the second thanks to a RBI single by sophomore shortstop Steve Seminerio (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) but the Valiants came back to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the third.  FDU tied it at 4-4 in the bottom half of the third before Manhattanville went back ahead, 6-4, in the top of the fourth.  The Valiants didn't have the lead for long though, as the Devils plated four in the bottom half to grab an 8-6 advantage thanks to a RBI single by senior catcher Marc Hubbert (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro) and a monster three-run home run by Fandel.  Sophomore pitcher Mike Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) worked a scoreless fifth inning, senior pitcher Adam Garry (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro) got a huge double play ball in a scoreless sixth inning and Laudati tossed a perfect seventh inning to pick up the save.

Fandel finished 2-for-3 with a home run, a run scored and four RBI while Seminerio went 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base, two runs scored and a RBI.  Sophomore pitcher Jake Hazen (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) started and picked up the win, going four innings and allowing six runs on 10 hits while striking out six.

GAME TWO - The Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run by Seminerio.  The Valiants tied it at 2-2 in the top of the third before taking a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth.  FDU came right back and evened things at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a two-run home run by junior outfielder Alex Sariyan (Oakland,  NJ/Indian Hills).  FDU then took a 6-4 advantage in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI triple by Joiner and a RBI double by senior third baseman Joey Santillo (Budd Lake, NJ/Mt. Olive).  Manhattanville cut it to 6-5 in the top of the sixth but the Devils got that run right back int he bottom of the inning on a RBI single from Joiner.  Laudati got the first two outs in the top of the seventh but then walked the next two batters before getting a groundout to end the game.

Joiner went 2-for-4 with a triple, a stolen base, a run scored and two RBI while Santillo was 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI.  Junior pitcher Brandon Smith (Burlington, NJ/Pennington Prep) picked up the win, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out five in six innings.

The Devils return to action on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at Maritime beginning at 7 pm.
