Devils Out-Slug King's, 18-12

WILKES-BARRE, PA - Sophomore designated hitter Matt Joiner (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and six RBI while sophomore shortstop Steve Seminerio (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) and sophomore first baseman Ryan Fandel (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) each drove in four runs to lead the College at Florham Devils to an 18-12 win over King's in the first game of a three game Freedom Conference weekend series.

With the win, the Devils improved to 25-5 (13-3 Freedom) while the Monarchs dropped to 18-11 (10-6 Freedom).  The win also clinched a spot in the upcoming Freedom Conference Tournament for FDU.

The Devil started the scoring with five runs in the top of the third inning on a RBI triple by Seminerio, a RBI single by Joiner, a RBI single by senior third baseman Joey Santillo (Budd Lake, NJ/Mt. Olive), an error by King's and a RBI single by Fandel.  King's came back with two runs in their half of the third and took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.  FDU tied it at 6-6 in the top of the fifth but King's got that run right back in their half of the fifth.  The Devils went ahead 9-7 in the top of the seventh thanks to a RBI single by junior outfielder Dan Pregno (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley), a RBI triple by Seminerio and a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Marc Hubbert (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro).  FDU tacked on six more runs in the eighth to grab a 15-7 advantage and then three more in the ninth to go up by a score of 18-7.  King's put a minor scare into the Devils in the bottom of the ninth by scoring five runs to close to within 18-12 but FDU was able to get out of it to earn the win.

Seminerio finished 3-for-6 with a double, two triples, four runs scored and four RBI while Fandel went 2-for-5 with a triple and four RBI.  Santillo had three hits while Hubbert had two hits and four runs scored.

Sophomore pitcher Glenn Cox (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) moved his record to 6-1 on the season with the win, allowing seven runs on eight hits in seven innings.

The two teams resume their series on Saturday, April 24, 2010, with a doubleheader at FDU beginning at 1 pm.
