Devils Edged By Eastern, 2-1

ST. DAVID'S, PA - The College at Florham Devils were defeated by Eastern, 2-1, in Freedom Conference action on Friday afternoon in the first game of a three-game weekend series.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 21-5 (10-3 Freedom) while the Eagles improved to 16-10 (6-5).

Eastern got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the second inning and the Eagles held a 1-0 lead all the way up until the top of the eighth inning.  Senior catcher Marc Hubbert (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro) led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a single by sophomore designated hitter Matt Joiner (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham).  After Joiner stole second, senior third baseman Greg Geran (Brick, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) walked to load the bases with no outs.  After a strike out, junior outfielder Alex Sariyan (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) tied the game with a sacrifice fly and though the Devils still had runners on first and third with two out, they could not push across any more runs.  With two out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Eastern came through with a RBI double that gave them a 2-1 lead and the win.

Sophomore pitcher Glenn Cox (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) was the hard-luck loser, going eight innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven.

The two teams return to action on Saturday, April 17, 2010, with a doubleheader at FDU beginning at 1 pm.
