Seven-Run Fifth Inning Helps FDU To 14-7 Win Over Manhattanville

PURCHASE, NY - Sophomore first baseman Ryan Fandel (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) went 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI to lead the College at Florham Devils to a 14-4 victory over Manhattanville in Freedom Conference action on Thursday afternoon.  The home run was Fandel's third in the past four games.

With the win, the Devils improved to 13-3 (5-1 Freedom) while the Valiants dropped to 7-11 (3-4 Freedom).

FDU got the scoring started immediately, plating two in the top of the first inning on a RBI double by sophomore shortstop Steve Seminerio (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) and a sacrifice fly by sophomore designated hitter Matt Joiner (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham).  Manhattanville responded with five runs in the bottom of the first to grab a 5-2 lead.  The Devils cut it to 5-4 in the top of the third thanks to RBI singles from Fandel and junior outfielder Alex Sariyan (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills).  The Valiants got one of those runs back in their half of the third to make it 6-4 but the Devils exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth to grab an 11-6 lead.  After the first two batters of the inning got on, Fandel ripped a RBI single, senior outfielder Mike Zangrillo (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) had a RBI single, senior second baseman Chris Baldino (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) roped a two-run double, junior outfielder Dan Pregno (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley) knocked in a run with a groundout, and senior third baseman Joey Santillo (Budd Lake, NJ/Mt. Olive) capped the inning with a two-run single.  Manhattanville cut it to 11-7 in their half of the fifth but the Devils got two more in the seventh on two-run home run by senior catcher Marc Hubbert (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro) to make it 13-7.  Fandel finished the scoring in the eighth inning with a solo home run to give the Devils the 14-7 win.

Zangrillo and Sariyan each went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI while Seminerio scored three runs .  Hubbert and Joiner each scored twice.

Sophomore pitcher Glenn Cox (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) moved to 4-0 on the season, as he picked up the win by tossing six innings and allowing seven runs on 10 hits while striking out four.  Joiner and senior pitcher Adam Garry (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro) went the last three innings without allowing a run.

The Devils return to action on Friday, April 2, 2010, at home against Delaware Valley beginning at 3:30 pm.
