Fandel Powers Devils To Doubleheader Sweep Of Wilkes

MADISON, NJ - Sophomore first baseman Ryan Fandel (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the College at Florham Devils beat Wilkes, 3-2, in Game One while also drilling a two-run home run to help the Devils win Game Two by a score of 10-4.

With the sweep, the Devils improved to 11-3 (4-1 Freedom) while the Colonels dropped to 4-9 (0-6 Freedom).

GAME ONE -Wilkes got out to a 1-0 lead after the top of the second inning and increased it to 2-0 in their half of the sixth.  FDU came back to tie it at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth on a Wilkes error and a RBI double by sophomore designated hitter Matt Joiner (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham).  Fandel then led off the bottom of the seventh inning with his walk-off blast.

Senior catcher Marc Hubbert (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro) went 2-for-2 with a run scored.  Sophomore pitcher Jake Hazen (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) threw a spectacular game, tossing a complete game seven inning and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out six.

GAME TWO - The nightcap started a lot like Game One ended as junior outfielder Dan Pregno (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley) and sophomore shortstop Steve Seminerio (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) led off the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back home runs to give FDU a 2-0 edge.  Later in the inning, Fandel made it 4-0 with a two-run homer.  Wilkes cut it to 4-1 in the top of the third inning but FDU got that run right back to make it 5-1 in the bottom of the third before taking a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.  The Colonels made it 6-3 in the top of the fifth inning and 6-4 in the top of the sixth but the Devils plated four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 10-4 thanks to a solo home run by freshman outfielder Nick Core (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), a RBI double from Seminerio and a two-run home run by Hubbert.

Seminerio finished 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, a stolen base, three runs scored and two RBI while Pregno went 2-for-3 with a home run, a stolen base, two runs scored and two RBI.  Junior pitcher Brandon Smith (Burlington, NJ/Pennington Prep) continued a string of good starting pitching for FDU, as he tossed six innings and allowed four runs (zero earned) on four hits while striking out eight.

The Devils return to action on Sunday, March 28, 2010, at home against CCNY beginning at 1 pm.
