DOYLESTOWN, PA - The College at Florham Devils split their Freedom Conference opener with Delaware Valley on Sunday afternoon, winning Game One by a score of 9-4 before losing Game Two by a count of 5-4.
With the split, the Devils now stand at 8-2 (1-1 Freedom) while the Aggies are 6-4 (1-1 Freedom).
GAME ONE - FDU got on the board right away with two runs in the top of the first inning on two unearned runs but the Aggies got one back in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1. The Devils plated two more in the top of the second, thanks to RBI doubles by sophomore shortstop
Steve Seminerio (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) and senior catcher
Marc Hubbert (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro), to grab a 4-1 lead. They then made it 6-1 in the top of the third on a RBI triple by freshman outfielder
Nick Core (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and a RBI single by senior second baseman
Chris Baldino (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge). Delaware Valley pushed across three runs in the bottom of the third to cut it to 6-4 but FDU got all three of those runs back in the top of the fourth to take a 9-4 lead on a bases-clearing double by sophomore first baseman
Ryan Fandel (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central). Neither team could muster another run the rest of the way allowing FDU to earn the victory.
Fandel was the only Devil with multiple hits while Seminerio scored two runs. Sophomore pitcher
Jake Hazen (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) picked up the win, going five innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out six. Sophomore pitcher
Matt Joiner (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) tossed the final two innings and did not allow a hit.
GAME TWO - The Devils got on the board again in the top of the first thanks to a RBI single by Hubbert. The Aggies tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the third before taking a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. FDU tied it at 4-4 in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Hubbert, a RBI single by junior outfielder
Alex Sariyan (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills), and a RBI single by junior outfielder
Dan Pregno (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley). The Aggies though, pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn the split.
Hubbert finished 3-for-3 with a home run, a run scored and two RBI while Pregno went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, a run scored and a RBI. Junior pitcher
Brandon Smith (Burlington, NJ/Pennington Prep) suffered the loss, tossing six innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out three.
The Devils return to action on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at Kean beginning at 3:30 pm.
