WINTER HAVEN, FL - Down 8-6 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, the College at Florham Devils scored three runs to grab a 9-8 lead and got Stevens out in order in the top of the ninth to beat the Ducks in the fourth game of their Spring Break Trip on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Devils improved to 5-1.
Stevens got on the board first, grabbing a 3-0 lead after two innings of play. FDU tied it at 3-3 after the third inning and took a 4-3 advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Ducks tied it up at 4-4 in their half of the seventh but the Devils took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the inning. Stevens then scored four in the top of the eighth to regain the lead at 8-6 but FDU scored three in the bottom half thanks to a sacrifice fly by senior catcher
Marc Hubbert (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro), a RBI single by sophomore designated hitter
Matt Joiner (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) and an error by the Stevens right fielder allowed the game-winning run to score.
Junior outfielder
Dan Pregno (Stanhope, NJ/Lenape Valley) had four hits, including a triple, while Joiner finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Hubbert was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI, sophomore first baseman
Ryan Fandel (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) went 2-for-5 with a RBI and senior second baseman
Chris Baldino (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) went 2-for-3.
Sophomore pitcher
Matt Mizerek (Matawan, NJ/Matawan) started the game and went 6.2 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out three. Sophomore pitcher
Chris Laudati (Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearly) came on in the eighth inning and tossed two perfect innings to pick up the win.
The Devils return to action on Thursday, March 18, 2010, with their finals games of the Spring Break Trip, a doubleheader against Greenville beginning at 1:30 pm.
