Albion Scores Five In the Ninth To Beat FDU, 7-4

GROVELAND, FL - Down 4-2 with two outs in the top of the ninth, Albion rallied for five runs to knock off the College at Florham Devils by a score of 7-4 in the first game of FDU's Spring Break Trip on Saturday morning.  It was the final game of the trip for Albion.

With the loss, the Devils dropped to 2-1.

The Britons started the scoring by notching a run in the top of the third before making it 2-0 in the fifth.  The Devils cut it to 2-1 in their half of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Alex Sariyan (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills).  FDU made it 4-2 after scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a RBI single by senior designated hitter Greg Geran (Brick, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) and two unearned runs after a throwing error by the Albion shortstop.  Sophomore pitcher Mike Winters (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) came on to pitch the ninth and struggles from the start, walking the first batter before getting the first out on a fielders choice.  After a single gave the Britons runners on first and second, Winters struck out the next batter but a walk loaded the bases.  Albion tied the game on a two-run single and took the lead when the next batter roped a two-run double.  A wild pitch later in the inning gave Albion their seventh run.  FDU had one on and one out in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't mount a rally as the next two batters grounded out.

FDU was only able to muster four hits in the game, coming from Geran, sophomore first baseman Matt Joiner (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham), senior outfielder Mike Zangrillo (Raritan, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) and senior second baseman Chris Baldino (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge).

Sophomore pitcher Glenn Cox (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) started the game and tossed six innings, allowing two runs on 10 hits while striking out three.  Winters suffered the loss as he went two-thirds of an inning, allowing five runs on four hits.

The Devils return to action on Sunday, March 14, 2010, against Salem State beginning at 2 pm.
