Volleyball Tops St. Joseph's Brooklyn in Five-Set Thriller

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – It took all five sets but the FDU-Florham volleyball team outlasted St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Thursday night in five sets as the Devils won their second match in a row.

DEVILS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Reigning Devil of the Week Genevieve Fitch tallied 19 kills on the night to lead all players.
  • Amay Ocasio notched a season high 47 assists Tuesday night.
  • Three Devils tallied double digit digs as Samantha Schneider recorded 18, Stephanie Lynch had 11 and Ocasio finished with 10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Devils fell behind 2-0 after the first two sets. Both came down to the wire, but the Bears came out on top 25-20 in set one and 25-23 in set two.
  • With their backs against the wall in set three, FDU exploded for six straight points to open the third set 6-0. Later, a string of five kills, two from Hannah Weinmann, two from Fitch, and one from Ariana Wood led to a 19-6 Devils lead, eventually taking set three 25-10.
  • In set four, FDU continued its onslaught as the Devils coasted to another win to knot the match at 2-2. After being down 4-2 early, an 8-0 run put FDU in the driver's seat and the Devils never looked back.
  • Set five went down to the wire as it was a back-and-forth set between the two squads.
  • The Bears held a 14-12 lead and were on the brink of victory when a Gabbie Hart kill and a St. Joseph's attack error knotted the set at 14 apiece. The Bears then took a 15-14 lead on an FDU attack error, but the Devil's resiliency stood strong as FDU strung together three straight points to take the match.
GAME NOTES
  • Ocasio's 47 assists were a career high for the sophomore.
  • Tuesday's match was FDU's first five-set match of the season.
  • The Devils tallied double digit kills in all five sets.
