Volleyball Falls to Sarah Lawrence, Defeats Nichols in Season-Opening Tri-Match

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The FDU-Florham volleyball team split its two tri-match contests Saturday afternoon on the road as the Devils fell 3-0 to Sarah Lawrence College but bounced back and swept Nichols 3-0 in the second match.

Devils Highlights
  • Tayla O'Connor led the Devils in kills against Sarah Lawrence with eight while Arianna Wood tallied six and Gabbie Hart finished with four
  • Amaya Ocasio recorded 16 assists and 13 digs in the first match against the Gryphons.
  • Genevieve Fitch finished with 14 kills in the day's second match against Nichols.
  • Ocasio led the team with three aces and tallied 29 assists against the Bison while Samantha Schneider totaled 11 digs.
How it Happened
  • The Devils opened the 2025 season with a slow start in the first match against Sarah Lawrence, dropping the first set 25-11.
  • Set two saw the Devils go toe-to-toe with the Gryphons as FDU got out to an early 3-0 lead capped off by an Ocasio ace. The two squads traded blows back and forth for much of the set but the Gryphons took a 16-12 lead and never relinquished it topping the Devils 25-20.
  • In set three, the Devils found themselves up 20-16, but four straight unanswered points from the Gryphons made it a one-point match at 21-20.  The two squads continued to go back-and-forth, but Sarah Lawrence came away with the 30-28 win.
  • In the day's second match against Nichols, set one was a back-and-forth match just like set three against Sarah Lawrence. The Devils and Bison traded blows, and despite two late points from Nichols to make it a 24-23 contest, Fitch sealed the set one win with a kill.
  • In set two, FDU fell behind 1-0 before six straight points put the Devils ahead 6-1. After an FDU attack error made it 16-15 in favor the Bison, FDU won the set with a 9-4 run capped off by another Fitch kill.
  • The two squads traded blows to start the third set, but after the Bison knotted the set at 15, FDU answered with five consecutive points to take a 20-15 lead. Nichols answered with four straight of its own, but the Devils held on for the win to sweep the match.
