NEW YORK – The FDU-Florham men's basketball team fell 76-71 to John Jay on the road Tuesday night despite a 42-point second half and double-digit point efforts from four Devils.
DEVILS HIGHLIGHTS
- Mac Creek led all FDU scorers with 18 points as he finished 3-for-7 from three and 7-for-10 from the stripe.
- Chris Smith tallied his second double-double of the year with a 15-point and 10-rebound effort.
- Frankie Denvir put up 12 points and eight boards with four assists.
- Noah Pagan managed 10 points for his first double-digit game of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bloodhounds struck first as the game's top scorer Jamir Stewart put John Jay up 3-0 just a minute and a half into the game with his first of six triples in the contest.
- It was back-and-forth for much of the first half, but after Creek put the Devils ahead 24-20 with a layup at the 6:13 mark, FDU went cold.
- The Bloodhounds went on a 9-0 run after three straight threes to take a 31-24 lead with 2:44 left to play in the half.
- Gino Romano answered with a three himself, but John Jay finished the half on a 9-2 run to take a 40-29 lead into the break.
- In the second half, the Devils continued to trail by as many as 19 as John Jay took a 63-44 lead with 9:33 left in regulation.
- A trey from Creek followed by a layup from O'Malley King and two free throws from Creek cut the FDU deficit to 13, 67-54 by the 6:35 mark.
- Then, with less than 3:00 to play, the buckets started falling for the Devils as Smith put two layups off the glass followed by two more free throws from Mac and a jay from Denvir to put FDU withing six, 70-64, with 2:08 left to play.
- The Devils offense gave it one last push in the final 1:00 as Denvir laid one in and Creek hit a triple to make it a five-point game with 22 seconds left, but a five-point game was the closest FDU would make it.
GAME NOTES
- Tuesday's game was Smith's sixth double-digit point game of the year
- This was Denvir's fourth double digit-point performance and the sophomore's second straight game with five or more steals.
- It was FDU's best free throw percentage of the season when going to the line 14 times or more (.778)
