Box Score 2 Jersey City, NJ (September 7) – The FDU-Florham volleyball team (3-3) traveled to New Jersey City University (NJCU) (1-3) for a tri-match against the Gothic Knights and Bryn Mawr (1-3) in non-conference action. Your Devils fought to the end against NJCU to the last points in the fifth set as they won 3-2 ( 25-23, 27-25, 26-24, 25-17, 16-14). FDU Florham secured the 3-1 over the Owls after a 27-25, 25-12, 25-19 and 25-22 set scores.
Vs. New Jersey City
First-year
Tayla O'Connor (Roxbury, NJ) led the Devils on the offensive attack with 12 kills, while classmate
Amaya Ocasio (Secaucus, NJ) added her effort of 22 assists.
Kiara Salme (Lyndhurst, NJ) helped on the defensive end with 17 digs, 3 assists, and 2 Aces.
Set 1: Throughout the first set, The Devils were at a back-and-forth stance with NJCU until a service error on FDU's 21st point gave them the momentum to close out the first set on a 5-1 run, resulting in a 25-23 first set score.
Set 2: In the second set, FDU and NJCU carried the tension into play as both teams found themselves tied at an 11-11 score after a Gothic Knight kill. The Devils were able to pull ahead to a 24-20 score but saw four straight points to tie the set at 24-24. After a kill by
Lilli Nawrotzki ( Flemington, NJ) and
Hannah Weinmann (Monroe Twp, NJ) the set was secured with a 27-25 overall score.
Set 3: The Gothic Knights found their rhythm early in the third set, as they jumped to a 7-4 lead. FDU was not about to fall behind with a chance to close out the match, therefore they tied the score at 12-12 after many kills including two from
Meghan Kreinberg (Union, NJ). NJCU jumped out to another lead but was slowed when FDU once again caught up at a 24-24 score. Two Kills by the Gothic Knights allowed them to end the set at a 24-26 score.
Set 4: NJCU found themselves fighting to stay alive in set four, therefore sparking a fire under to jump out to a 6-12 start. FDU was not able to keep up as they found themselves falling behind in the set and eventually loosing by a score of 25-17, tying the match at 2 sets pers team.
Set 5: The fire was still burning for the Gothic Knights as a 10-4 run was seen to start the fifth set. FDU-Florham was able to take the heat and recovered to keep the game close at a 14-14 score. With a two-point victory required to win the set, FDU's
O'connor and
Gabbie Hart (Cherry Hill, NJ) secured the set win with two straight kills, and acquired the match win by a score of 3-2.
Vs. Bryn Mawr
O'Connor led the Devils in their second match of the day with 15 kills, while
Ocasio recorded a collegiate-high 34 assists.
Salme and
Fitch added 13 digs to the Devils' defensive efforts.
Set 1: FDU-Florham and Bryn Mawr started the match at a back-and-fourth but found themselves tied at a 7-7 score after an attack error by the Owls'. The set remained close throughout but was tied again at a 25-25 set after, trading points. With a service ace from
Salme, the Devils jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a 27-25 set final score.
Set 2: From the first few points, Bryn Mawr were eager to secure a set as they jumped out to a 7-12 lead and did not look back. The Devils gave their best efforts to catch up but were not able to keep up as they saw a 25-12 loss in Set 2.
Set 3: In an effort to speed the match up, FDU-Florham was able to started on their attack from the first point as they saw a 10-5 lead. Later In the set, the Owls were able to tie the score at 14-14 after a kill. With six straight points and an attack error to end the set, the Devils were able to earn their second set with a 25-19 score.
Set 4: In their final set of the day, FDU-Florham was able to score the first points of the fourth set. Bryn Mawr was then able to score three straight points to remain close to the Devils. The set was then see tied at a 15-15 score after multiple Devil kills. With the set score close once again at the end, the pressure was on for the Owls as they handed the FDU the 25-22 win and a 3-1 match win after two offensive errors.
FDU-Florham will be back on the courts when they travel to Brooklyn University on Tuesday, September 10 for a 6:00pm non-conference match.
