Late Penalty Stroke Sinks Field Hockey at Penn State Harrisburg

Harrisburg, Pa. (September 4) – In a highly defensive contest that came down to the final quarter, the FDU-Florham field hockey team was on the wrong end of a penalty stroke that sunk the Devils in their first road contest of the season at Penn State Harrisburg, 1-0 on Wednesday night.

FDU generated most of the opportunities in the first quarter, outshooting Harrisburg, 5-2 with the best opportunity coming in the ninth minute from Abigail Antipas (Catasauqua, Pa.), who put one on goal but was stopped by Lions goalie Macenzie Mulholland.
 
The second quarter was the most defensive of the game as the Lions held the Devils to zero shots while only finding two of their own, one of which was saved by Emily Schlessinger (Asbury, N.J.) and the game went into halftime scoreless.
 
Penn State Harrisburg controlled almost all of the offensive opportunities when they garnered six of the period's seven shots but once again could not find the back of the cage as the Fairleigh Dickinson defense held. Schlessinger picked up three saves in the quarter to keep the game at a 0-0 standstill heading into the final period of play.
 
The Devils saw five shots in the fourth period to the Lions one, but the difference maker came in the 56th minute of the game when Penn State was awarded a penalty stroke and capitalized to take a 1-0 lead with just a few minutes left to go. Penn State Harrisburg eventually held on a secured their second win of the season.
 
Schlessinger played the entirety of the minutes played in the contest and collecting four saves while Adrianna Goodwin (Toms River, N.J.) stepped in for the penalty stroke opportunity.
 
As a team, both the Lions and the Devils shot an even 12 shots for the game with Penn State Harrisburg outing five on goal to FDU-Florham's two. Penn State also owned the penalty corner advantage in the contest, 12-8 and both teams were even with 39 fouls apiece
 
FDU-Florham will be back in action on Wednesday, September 11 for a 5:00pm contest against Muhlenberg on Robert T. Shields Field.
