Madison, NJ (September 19) – The FDU-Florham Volleyball Team (6-6, 0-0 MAC Freedom) was seen slipping in the final three sets of the non-conference match against Sarah Lawrence (5-3,1-0 Skyline), as the Gryphons rallied to secure the final three sets for the 3-2 win over the Devils.
The box score recorded the Devils statistics leader with 17 kills and 19 digs, as well as 2 service aces from
Genevieve Fitch (Charleston, SC). Close behind was
Tayla O'Connor (Roxbury, NJ) as she dove for 20 digs, 14 kills, and 5 service aces.
Amaya Ocasio (Secaucus, NJ) was seen helping her teammates with 21 assists.
Set 1: The match and first set started out on an even balance as each team would try to take the lead, but be pulled back within 1 to 2 points. After two attack errors and a service ace from
O'Connor, FDU-Florham was able to take a tremendous lead and finally break free for a 25-14 first-set win.
Set 2: Once again the set started out as a battle, but this time carried through as there were 7 score ties until the scoreboard read, 19-19. With a team effort, four straight Devils points were scored with two Gryphons points to come with 4 points of a 25-21 set loss to FDU.
Set 3: Sarah Lawrence would not back down from the heat resignation of the Devils 2-0 match sets, as they scored tied 13 times in the third set, 17-17. The Devils were able to squeeze in three points before seven straight points allowed Sarah Lawrence to come back and take a 24-20 score. With the desire to close out the match, FDU-Florham secured two of the four points but was stopped short with a 25-22 score and the set belonging to the Gryphons.
Set 4: With a set under their belt, Sarah Lawrence jumped on the opportunity to claim another as the score read 10-4. The Devils were able to find their rhythm again to tie the score at 14-14 after a kill by
Hannah Weinmann (Monroe Twp, NJ). The scoreboard was seen tied once more and then saw points built for Sarah Lawrence as they were able to pull ahead for the 25-19 score in set four.
Set 5: After letting the Gryphons back in to tie the match at 2 sets apiece, the pressure was on for FDU-Florham as they scored four straight points to take the 4-3 lead. Sarah Lawrence kept the match within a point's reach as both teams traded serves until a kill by
Ocasio sparked another flame and the Devils to the 14-11 lead. FDU-Florham unfortunately slipped and allowed Sarah Lawrence to even the score until the 18th as two straight kills closed the 20-18 set for the Gryphons and the 3-2 match over the Devils.
FDU-Florham will be on the road for their next match at the Keystone Tri-Match with Purchase College, on Saturday, September 21 at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
