Madison, N.J. (September 1) – The FDU-Florham Men's Soccer team advanced to championship game of the Drew/ FDU Fall Festival to face the Kean Cougars, after defeating Drew on Friday evening. The Devils emerged victorious as they safely secured the tournament championship title with a 5-1 non-conference win.
Records: FDU-Florham (2-0); Kean (1-1)
Location: Madison, NJ (Ranger Stadium)
FDU Goal Scorers: Christian Adame (1, 2),
Drilon Toska (1),
Landon San Martin (1),
Irfan Kermalli (1)
The game was out to a physical start as each team committed multiple fouls with no offensive results coming from the minor setbacks. After 17 minutes of play, it was FDU-Florham who struck first as
Drilon Toska (Lincoln Park, NJ) broke away up the side of the field, only to find
Christian Adame (Passaic, NJ) on the other side with a cross pass to chip the ball past the goalie for not only his first goal of the season but as well as the Devils first goal of the game.
At the 35:17 minute mark, an FDU Player was fouled in the goalie box resulting in a penalty kick for the Devils.
Toska lined up to take the shot and snuck it past the Kean goalie to go up 2-0.
A few moments later, another offensive spurt occurred for the Devils as it was
Ryan Maguire (Toms River, NJ) who broke away up the field and found
Landon San Martin (Boonton, NJ) for his first collegiate goal, 3-0. With this, FDU was able to successfully convert on all three shots in the first half.
Just six minutes into the second half, Kean was able to put their first and only goal of the game on the board, as a Cougar was able to convert on the penalty kick.
After a defensive stop, FDU-Florham found the opportunity for a breakaway, resulting in
Genti Dauti (Lincoln Park, NJ) assisting
Adame for this second goal of the day with just 16 minutes remaining in the game, 4-1.
With the help of multiple Devil players weaving through Kean's defense, the ball eventually made it's way to
Pedro Lanchipa ( Paterson, NJ) who saw
Irfan Kermalli (Morris Plans, NJ) wide open on the right side and was able to blast the ball past the goalkeeper to put up the Devils fifth and final goal. Kean made the effort in creating an offensive comeback, but it was too late to do so as time expired with the scoreboard remaining in FDU-Florham's favor, 5-1.
Graduate student
Anthony Petrucci (West Orange, NJ) made multiple crucial saves as he recorded four saves on the day to help secure the Drew/ FDU Fall Festival championship title.
In the contest, Kean out shot FDU-Florham, 14-7, but did not aim as well as the Devils as 6 shots on goal were accounted for compared to Kean's 5. The corner kicks were in favor of FDU as they saw 5 opportunities, compared to FDU's 6 corner kicks.
FDU-Florham will return to Robert T. Shields Field on Wednesday, September 4, when they host CCNY for a 7:00 PM non-conference match up.
