Madison, N.J. (April 30)- The fourth seeded FDU-Florham men's tennis team is set for MAC Freedom Playoff action after clinching last week with their 6-3 win at Arcadia. They will travel to take on the top-seeded and five-time defending MAC Freedom Champions Stevens for a 3:30pm start in Hoboken N.J.
The Ducks hold an all-time record of 10-1 against the Devils, including defeating them 9-0 this season on April 17. Stevens also faced off in the MAC Freedom Championship Match last season against FDU-Florham where they won 5-0 to win their fifth-straight title.
Fairleigh Dickinson holds an overall record of 3-11 with a 2-4 MAC Freedom record this season. They made the MAC Freedom playoffs with their overall match tiebreaker over Arcadia and King's (Pa.). To pull out the huge upset and hand Stevens their first conference loss since joining the MAC Freedom, the Devils will need to rely on their veteran rackets, especially in the doubles matches. The duo of
Matthew Emery (Howell, N.J.) and
Ronald Duval (Old Bridge, N.J.) have garnered an 8-6 record on the year from the Doubles #1 spot while
Kelvin Liwag (Marlboro, N.J.) and
Brandon Schwartz (Gladwyne, Pa.) have been very efficient from the Doubles #2 spot, posting an 11-4 record from the Doubles #2 spot. Due to inclement weather, the Devils vs. Ducks matchup did not see a doubles session so all of the matchups will be a first on the season.
Despite some struggles from the singles position this season, Emery was neck-in-neck with Aashi Kulakarni in the second set with a 4-4 score in Singles #1 before that match was called due to a match clinching victory for Stevens and the impending weather on the day of the contest.
For Stevens, they enter with an overall record of 11-6 and a 6-0 MAC Freedom. They have dominated the conference front this season with only DeSales taking a single match from them in all six conference contests. The game plan is simple for Stevens: keep playing the way they have all season.
The winner of this contest will face the winner of #2 DeSales and #3 Lebanon Valley on Saturday with a time and location to be determined by the host. The winner of the MAC Freedom Championship will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Admission to any MAC Freedom playoff game will be free.
