Football Stalled by Widener in 10-7 Loss

Madison, NJ (November 9)- With being back on their home field after finishing all its regular season away games, The FDU-Florham Football Team (6-3, 5-3) hosted Widener for MAC action a low-scoring game that resulted in a 10-7 loss for the Devils. .


Senior Ryon Thomas (Mattapoisett, Mass.) was seen in the box score with 138 passing yards on 18 of 25 completions. He also added 102 yards on 23 carries in the run game. FDU-Florham's main running back, Kwanir Edwards (Trenton, NJ), followed behind with 78 yards on 10 carries and notched the lone touchdown of the game for the Devils. Receiving statistics showed Anthony Bilotta (Cedar Grove, NJ) at the top with eight receptions on 58 yards.

Nathan Saccal (Alexandria, NJ) totaled the most tackles on the day with 12, including 7 solos and half of a sack for 2 yards. Capturing the most sacks on the day was Isaiah Massey (New Rochelle, NY.) as he was credited 1.5 sacks for 5 yards, to slow the Widener offense. Otis Harlod kept the ball from going too far into FDU's territory as he had 4 solo tackles and 3 assisted tackles (7 total).
 
After choosing to receive with being deferred from FDU, the Pride started their drive at their own 18-yard line. They were not able to make it into FDU's territory resulting for the first punt of the game. after 11 plays reaching the WID20, the Devils were forced to turn the ball over on downs without converting for the first points of the game. Neither team was able to break the goal line for a score in the first quarter.
 
It was not until more than halfway through the second quarter, points lit up the scoreboard in the endzone. However, the first points of the game were scored by Widener as a short pass turned into a 48-yard touchdown for the Pride. The extra point was put through the uprights making it a 7-0 game.
 
FDU-Florham gave it their effort to tie the score before breaking for halftime but was unable to make their way to the redzone to be in touchdown range. The Devils did send the field goal unit out for a 47-yard attempt but were not able to put up 3 points before the time expired.
 
With the first offensive chance in the second half, FDU-Florham knew that it had to capitalize on the opportunity that was presented. With picking up four first downs, the Devils worked their way to the WID16, where Edwards was able to break away on a 16-yard rush for six points. Chris Maida ( Red Bank, NJ) was able to secure the extra point to tie the game, 7-7. The defense played a key role as the game would be decided in the fourth quarter.
 
FDU-Florham carried their drive into the fourth quarter and was close to taking the lead, but Widener stuck their hands in the right position to sang an interception that may have been the game-winning touchdown for the Devils. The Pride were unable to convert for six points after bringing it to the FDU18, and was also stopped short of three points after Rocco Bonavolonta (Stanhope, NJ) blocked the field goal, with Aaron Smith (Naugatuck, Conn.) recovering the ball at the FDU31.
 
Even with the momentum they needed, FDU was unable to bring the ball closer to the Widener endzone, which them to punt away to the Pride and rely on their defense. With a minute and forty seconds on the clock, Widener quickly moved the chains to FDU's side of the field but was stopped at the 13-yard line where they were forced to kick a 31-yard field goal to take the lead, 10-7, with three seconds remaining. FDU-Florham looked for a hail-mary to win the game but was not able to find anyone downfield, resulting in the overall loss to the Widener Pride.

FDU-Florham looks to host their last regular season game on Saturday, November 16 against Eastern for A MAC matchup. The Devils also plan to honor their 39 seniors during the pregame ceremony.
